Here is Lars and family in the 1860 Census:

And yes Niels Olsen was born in Sweden and was not a soldier. Well, not then anyway.

Wow! I had not seen the 1860 census before! I did not know about Johanne. Perhaps she died young. But Ane Cathrine's age is not right as she is 28 on 1850 census at Tipperup and 33 in 1855 at Helsingor which ties in with the baptism date of 1822 which I had.  I do not have their marriage record. Please would you send me a link. I think the father was listed as a husbandsman and oilhandler on the census. Can't lay my hands on my original records at the moment which a helpful Danish genealogist found for me after I put an advert in a Danish newspaper. He even located a relative in Denmark for me but the relative was not interested in family connections! Pity!  I am so grateful for what you have discovered, I am sure a stepfather figures in it somewhere. do you ahve any more census records for the family or can you tell me how to find them. I don't speak Danish but do speak German which is sometimes a help and I can usually work out a rough translation.

any ideas about the uniform?

many thanks, Ian.

Hi Val
I'll get back to you with the records. The uniform is difficult. I can't find them after 1860 at the moment. We'll see. Niels probably came from the south of Sweden looking for work in Denmark. I don't think the picture of the soldier is Niels.

Thank so much, Ian. I look forward to receiving anything useful when you have time. I have a census record for 1850 1855 and one for 1885 for daughter Hansine Sophie who by then was married and living at Osterfarimagsgade 20 in Kobenhaven. I went to see the house/flat a couple of years ago although she of course is long dead. Bendt also came to England as a seaman, changed his name to Benjamin, married and became a coal miner. I also received some parish church records from Denmark which were helpful. Names are problematic though as so many are similar. Do you live in Sweden?

Hi Val

You're welcome...

Yes, I live in Sweden but am not Swedish.
As you have probably found out by now, if you click on "Original Kilde" for the census you will get the original copy.

I'll get back to you.
Regards Ian

Hi Val

Can I use your photo to put up on another forum here in Sweden to see if anything comes up?

According to a Swedish gentleman on a forum the medal on the first image is from the Dannebrogorden: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_the_Dannebrog

Here are some images of the different types of the Dannebrog medal: http://www.emedals.com/collectors-gallery/europe/denmark/orders/order-of-the-dannebrog

Also he says that the other younger soldier is definately not Swedish so I suppose it is a Danish soldier.

As requested this is the reverse of the photo of my ancestor and his wife . Perhaps this will help with my search for info on his uniform/role.
