COMPLETED - Samuel JONES - marriage problem
« on: Wednesday 16 February 11 13:07 GMT (UK) »
Hello  ;D

I would like some help finding out about the first marriage of my g.g.g.gf Samuel JONES.
Can anyone offer any ideas about what research to do next? Please see below for details of the problem!

Background info

Samuel JONES was born in Talgarth, Breconshire, Wales in 1810.

There is an entry in the Talgarth Parish register for the baptism of Samuel JONES on 21 Dec 1809.
The parents' names are Phillip JONES and Ann JONES. Father's occupation is 'Skinner'.
The researcher at Powys Record Office says that there were no other baptism entries for the name Samuel JONES for five years either side of this date in the Talgarth parish baptism register.

Can't find suitable match in 1841 census.

Possible match in 1851 census on HO107/2490/670/4
Samuel JONES, Head, Married, M, 42, 1809, Carpenter, Talgarth, Brecknockshire
Wife is Maria JONES.
The marriage of Samuel JONES and Maria MORGAN was on 29 Sep 1834 in Crucywel (Crickhowell) parish.
Problem: This 1851 census entry lists Samuel JONES' father as John JONES, Retired carpenter.
The father's name and occupation differs from the entries on the baptism register and 2nd marriage certificate.
It seems that this Samuel JONES is a different one from the one who is my g.g.g.gf.
Can anyone offer any alternative explanations as to why the father's name and occupation might be different?

Samuel JONES' second marriage.
Marriage of Samuel JONES to Anne DELAHAY on 31 July 1853 at the Catholic Church in Hereford.
Samuel JONES' father's name appears as Philip JONES with occupation 'Skinner' (deceased)
Samuel JONES' condition is 'Widower'. Samuel JONES' occupation is 'Cabinet Maker'.

Can't find suitable match in 1861 census.

Samuel JONES, Pauper inmate, M, 71, 1810, Cabinet maker (retired), Talgarth Brecknockshire

Any ideas about what to try next to find out about Samuel's first marriage? Also, if anyone can offer any ideas about where Samuel JONES is in 1841, that would help too.

Thanks in advance,
