1861 Census - Charles Herbert Marrison
« on: Thursday 17 February 11 22:20 GMT (UK) »
Forgive me if I have put this in the wrong Riding  :-\

Charles Herbert Marrison  was born about 1857 in Sheffield and I wonder if anyone can help me with his 1861 census record and if possible 1871?

I have only vague and unreliable details of his parents such as the names John and Mary.

I'm trying to trace Charles's ancestors and would  be grateful  for any help

Hi Gerry

In 1861 there is a Herbert Marrison age 3 with parents John  58, Mary 43.
23 Mather ST SHeffield.
John born in Haworth, Mary in Notts, says Eakring?
Herbert - Sheffield

1871 had Herbert 13 and John 67 and widowed, boarding at what looks like Butterells Yard off Dun Lane, North Sheffield.

Is it possible that this is Charles Herbert, the Charles added later?

A Mary Marrison died in 1861 - Holbeck, Leeds though so maybe far from correct.

Familysearch.org has a Herbert Marrison baptised 07 Dec 1858 at St. George's, Sheffield.

Parents shown as Joseph Marrison and Hannah......

Looks promising as it ties in nicely with the other postings by msr....

Gerrry, although his birth was registered Charles Herbert, looks like he went under the name of Herbert.

RG09 / 3486 / 86 / 6

Possible death for Mary - correction: there are 2 possibles

Mary Marrison
March 1861 / Sheffield
Vol No: 9c / Page No: 237

Mary Marrison / Age 41
Dec 1866 / Sheffield
Vol No: 9c / Page No: 211

Hard to judge which one is yours as the age has not been submitted on the 1861 death.

Yep, we understand the Mc.

Gerry, I think the death in 1866 is more likely to belong to your family.  The first one is probably the baby born 1861.

Thanks everyone, your replies are helpful.

I said only vague details were known about the parents but  I have pencil notes showing  John was born c.1798 and Mary c.1817.     I'm sorry this was not mentioned  because I (wrongly) thought they would be too old for a 3 year old.

Sheffield BMDs record the birth of Charles Herbert Marrison in 1857, perhaps he was known and recorded just as  Herbert  - not uncommon in census records.    Census findings by Su and Madri support this is the correct  family  and Charles Herbert appears to be an only child.

I will try and make inroads into the ancestors of John born c.1798.

Much appreciate your help

Gerry
