Tasburgh COMPLETED
« on: Friday 18 February 11 15:54 GMT (UK) »
Could anyone sort this out for me please - was Tasburgh (now Norfolk) ever in Suffolk???? In the 1901 census for William Rix and wife Eliza, Ancestry say born in "Tasburgh, Suffolk".  On the 1911 census, William gives his p of b as "Tasburgh, Norfolk" (as does Google!).

 ???

Many thanks

Hi Tilly

On the actual census copy the county is written first but  " "  down the page and the town written against it - unfortunately the person above William Rix was born Hamsgate ?, Suffolk written in that order with no ditto marks though the ditto marks then continued down the page.  Personally I think it looks as though the enumerator was dittoing Norfolk to all but the entry before your William and that Williams transcription entry should in fact read Norfolk.

Many thanks for your replies - I thought it probably was a transcription error by Ancestry........  FindMyPast are obviously better at geography than Ancestry (and me!!), but I thought I had better check just in case Tasburgh had changed counties at some time!  And as these Rixes are proving very hard to pin down and William's son never seemed to know where he was born, well - anything was possible! :P

Thank you again very much for your help.

I have an ancestor who says he was born in Halstead, Suffolk in the 1881 census but Halstead is well and truly in Essex and was during his lifetime and seems to have been since Essex was created.
