Advice needed - Sunray Cutler
« on: Saturday 19 February 11 13:17 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I am seeking advice on whether to buy a birth certificate for a relation who, up until yesterday, I didn't know existed.

Richard Cutler married Elizabeth Carr in 1841 at Great Marlow, Buckinghamshire. They had nine children, all born at Lane End (Great Marlow Parish:

William b 1842
Ann b 1844
Jane b 1846
Rebecca b 1848
Emma b 1850
Ellen b 1854
Mary Ann b 1856
Clara b 1858
Caroline b 1860.

However, yesterday, I was sent pages from a family bible for this family, and another child was recorded - Sunray Cutler, born 21 February 1852. There is no birth or death record for Sunray, but there is a birth and death Registration in June quarter 1852 for a Male Cutler child in Wycombe, Buckinghamshire.

Births Jun 1852 Cutler  Male     Wycombe  3a 376
Deaths Jun 1852 Cutler  Male     Wycombe  3a 242

I can't see a burial from my Bucks FHS returns of the Cutler family that would fit the death of Male Cutler, or a baptism.

So my question is... Do you think I should order the birth certificate of Male Cutler to see if it is the same child as Sunray?

Any suggestions/advice greatly appreciated
Matt

Hello Matt,

I can't tell you what to do but I have ordered my first "male death" only to eliminate this person from a very similar named unrelated family.
The gaps between your living children are all two years apart except for the 4 year gap between Emma & Ellen where Sunray could have been born.
I personally would order it only to eliminate this person otherwise there will always be that "What if..." at the back of your mind.
But that means you still have to investigate Sunray.
You could always put it to one side for now because this event is not preventing you from continuing with your Tree?

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the reply. I am not directly descended from this family - Richard's brother William is my great (x4) grandfather, so it is not a 'brick wall' as such, just a question mark.

However... I think I will order the birth or death certificate... thinking about it, the Cutler family in Wycombe is a large family and chances are that 'Male' Cutler is related somewhere else if he is not the son of Richard and Elizabeth Cutler.

Wish me luck!

Matt  :)

That's a shame but at least you now know not to bother chasing this one !
How far have you got with this family?, are you sure William was born in 1842 not 1852, if so, is William "Sunray" an unusual name for this family considering the other names were pretty conventional, could it be a "Pet name" for William (if he was born in 1852) until they decided what actual name to give him. ?
Ellen does not appear in the 1861 Census do you know what happened to her, did she die ?

Hi Steve,

You could ask BucksFHS to do a search for you.  About £1 a go, I think.  http://www.bucksfhs.org.uk/index.php

Cheaper than certs, and could provide an answer or two.

May I ask the name of the Monks Risborough CUTLER birth.  I have Cutlers in Monks Risborough. (PM please).

Steve. :)

Hello Steve,

Thanks for the tip but it's Matt doing the research, perhaps he will take up your suggestion ?
I find the FamilySearch Site a very good start only because I think their new Site is so much better than Ancestry giving you much fewer results to trawl through then I tend to use that data for the Ancestry Site.
In Matt's case, I could find no record of his births in the FamilySearch Site.
I found the Census in Ancestry except William (b1842) is not listed in 1851 & 1861, I believe the Father may have died around 1870 and I found a William Cutler in 1871 listed as a Boarder (staying with relatives due to his father's death?), and other Census' but born in 1852, the same or similarly named person ?
I think Matt (like a lot of us) has a tricky one here, good luck to him !

I think I will have to change my name from Steve, because with so many Steve's about,  I thought for a moment that I had begun emailing myself !  ;)
