Eliza Jane Slee
« on: Saturday 19 February 11 18:04 GMT (UK) »
my grandfather James Arthur Slee was born in middlesbrough in 1874.
his parents were James Slee and Eliza Jane Slee ( nee Dabron ).
they had married in 1862.   James Arthur Slee was, i think the sixth child.
by the time of the 1881 census, his farther and three of his siblings had
moved in with his Slee grandparents, and James Arthur has been adopted
by Stephen and Hannah Petch at Hetton-le-Hole.
i've been unable to find out what happened to Eliza Jane. can you help?

Have you found the family on earlier censuses?  If so what place of birth and age are given for Eliza?  Whereabouts where the family living?

I tried looking on FreeBMD for a death in case Eliza had passed away but without knowing when she was born it's hard to choose which of the six possibles between 1874 and 1881 might be her.

Was James Arthur Slee her last child?  What's the last date you have proof of her living?

Lots of questions!  Will help narrow down the search area though.

Heather

Thankyou for your help.
I will expand on the information i have on Eliza Jane.

Eliza Jane Debron was born Norton ( Stockton ) in 1840
1861 census at age 20 was living with her mother - Rhoda at Norton.
1862 married James Slee from Barnard Castle, also born 1840.
( marriage cert has Eliza as Dabron )
1871 census, at 10 Garbutt street, Stockton with four children-
Louise Jane, Sarah Ellen, Thomas Debron, and Rhoda Emma.
The next child -  Elizabeth Ann arrived after the census in 1871
about the same time that Rhoda Emma died.
My grandfather - James Arthur Slee was born on the
2nd November 1874 at 41 Charles Street, Middlesbrough.
His birth cert is the last proof I have that Eliza Jane existed.
1881 census has the Dad - James as unmarried !
with three of his children - Sarah Ellen, Thomas,
and Elizabeth Ann all living a few streets away at 19 Pollard Street,
the home of his parents who had also moved from Barnard Castle.
In 1881 Charles Street No.41 was the home of the Hart family.
Also in 1881 - Louise Jane at 18 was in Hetton Le Hole as a
Domestic Servant with her Aunt.
My grandfather - James Arthur at 6 years old is listed as Adopted by
Stephen and Hannah Petch, also in Hetton.
So what happened to Eliza Jane Slee ?  Please

the 1881 census image shows that James Slee was a Widower (Widr) not unmarried.

Registration was not compulspry until 1875, if she died before that then she may not have been registered.  It does not say where you are on your profile but I think your best bet would be the parish records for her burial.

Thanks for the info madpants.

As I can obtain a birth and marriage certificate for Eliza, and birth certs for all the children, it looks like the registration process for this family was no problem. So I find it hard to believe that her death was not registered.  The search goes on.

Hello,
would love to make contact regarding the family of James Slee and Eliza Jane Dabron.
Although I have no further information than some of what you already have, she is a missing link in the Dabron line which I am researching.
Cheers
