John and Ellen Hogan, West Bengal, India early 1800s
« on: Sunday 20 February 11 02:44 GMT (UK) »
Seeking information on family line of my great-grandmother, Margaret Hogan, born in Mhow, West Bengal, India 1860.  She had a sister named Kate (I have photo's of her).  The only sketchy information I have is that her father's name was John Hogan and her mother's name was Ellen.  They were from Ireland. They were missionaries in India. Later on he was in the Sepoy Mutiny.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Are you sure they were missionaries? A number of these births, including Margaret's, were reported in the regimental returns of 95th Foot.

Shaun,

Thank you so much!!  :)

I've checked my record for my great-grandmother's birth and you found the correct information.  I believe they were missionaries before he enlisted.  In later years when Catherine (known as Kate) passed away she left her estate to the Jesuit brothers (my mom conveyed this to me, and it was the influence of her parents missionary work we believe that she made that decision).  My mom is going to be thrilled that this info has been provided.  Thank you once again.

These are the two photos I have of Catherine (Kate) Hogan my great-aunt.  I've loved these photos since I was a small child.  I would image that my great-grandmother looked quite similar to her.
