It just dawned on me that perhaps, it was John Hogan's parent who were missionaries?  If John was only 15 when he joined the army he could not have been doing missionary work prior to that. 

Thank you once again, it's really wonderful to fill in this piece of family history especially since Monday, February 21st is a holiday here in Canada (Family day!).

Perhaps it was Ellen's family who were missionaries?

I just found this by luck!  I'm hoping it is the same John Hogan (by the date of the attestation papers, I think it is)

Some interesting correlations there but the one whose army papers I have been reading states his place of birth as Newry, County Down. He joined the 95th in Newport Hampshire. More digging required to confirm that this is the same John Hogan !

They have digitised discharge papers for 120 soldiers by the name of John Hogan.

There was one in 64th foot who was born in Nenagh and served in the Indian mutiny - possibly a better fit for the first archive reference that you found
