GGG GParents william and helen oliver
« on: Sunday 20 February 11 23:55 GMT (UK) »
I am researching the Oliver family from Cavers Roxburgh. My GGG Grandfather was William Oliver b. c1790 married to Helen nee Mason b. c1790. I do know they had a daughter Agnes b. c1820. Agnes Easton Oliver married William Brodie a land steward, I do not have a date. Agnes died in 1882 in Edinburgh. I don't know where the Easton part of Agnes' name comes from or where Agnes and William lived. I would be grateful if anyone can help and if there are any Olivers still in the area I would be delighted to  hear from them.

Hi

The IGI (extracted series) has William and Helen having 3 children baptised in Cavers:

24 June 1815 - William
27 April 1817 - Thomas
13 Jan 1820 - Agnes

I'll see if I can find anything more about them.

In 1841,  Helen is living with her son, William, but this might give some idea of her age:

Coldmill, Cavers

William Oliver, 25, joiner - master
Helen, 60

Both b. Roxburghshire

Note that in the 1841,  ages over 15 were rounded down so Helen could be anything between 60 and 64

I think that this is Helen's baptism -  from the IGI again:

13 July 1778, Lilliesleaf, Roxburghshire

Helen Mason. Parents - William Mason and Agnes Easton

I note that a son Thomas was the informant on her death cert and her husband is recorded as a gardener, so I think that this might be William Brodie and Agnes in 1861

Seafield, Santan, Isle of Man
RG9/4432/18/6

William Brodie, 39, gardener, b. Scotland
Agnes, 39, b. -do-
William, 15, Ap gardener, b. England
Ann M, 13, b. I of M, Arbory
James, 8, b. I of M, Santon
Thomas G, 3, b. -do-
Robert O, 4 months, b. -do-

1851

Cropag Road, Malew, Isle of Man
HO107/2526/95/2

William Brodie, 28, gardener, b. Scotland
Agnes, 28, b. Scotland
William, 5, b. England
Anna M, 3, b. I of M, Arbory

And in 1871

Clint, Crossmichael,  Kirkcudbrightshire

Agnes Brodie, 46, gardener's widow, b. Hawick
James, 15, gardener, b. Castletown, I of M
Thomas George, 13, b. -do-
Robert Oliver, 10, b. -do-

and 1881

4 Murdoch Terrace, Edinburgh, St Cuthbert

Agnes Brodie, 60, formerly laundress, b. Hawick
Robert O , printer, b. I of Man

As you will know, Cavers is very close to Hawick
