BRADLEY family-possible travellers
« on: Tuesday 22 February 11 12:22 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I have been chasing William BRADLEY born in Hereford/shire for several years now. There are 3 Wm Bradleys on the IGI (Aymestry, Little Birch & Lingen)-at the right time,1825,  but how do I know which is mine?
1901 census-born in Thorne? Haftonbury Hill? - a tin worker
1891 born Hereford Town - a pedlar
1881 born Hereford - a pedlar
I cannot find him before this, even though he and his wife JANE had several children including my G grandmother ROSANNAH b 1863. I cannot find ROSANNAH born in All Stretton, Salop in 1871 census.
I now think he was a gypsey or traveller of some kind. JANE was from Sedgley in Staffordshire-presumable he was there buying nails for his work. Help! Avril

If possible, you need to find his marriage cert - that will give his father's name.  (if you don't know Jane's maiden name, you might need to get a birth cert of one of their children to get her maiden name).

I know her maiden nme was Davies.
Can't find the marriage- but there was a marriage between William Bradley and jane Davies in Aberystwyth around 1868. Why go all the way to Aberystwyth and wait until after all the children had been born? A long way for a day out?

It does seem like a long trek - but hey, maybe they went to the seaside and got caught up in the moment  ;)

Have been looking for Rosehannah (and variant spellings) in 1871 - no luck.

But, I also cannot find a birth registration for her in 1863-1865?

Are you basing her age and place of birth on the 1881 census?
Or do you have other evidence of her birth?
E.G. Marriage certificate? Death certificate?
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

I have Rosannah's  birth cert- born May 1863 All Stretton, Salop. She has siblings born in Cardington, Diddlebury and a few other Shropshire parishes. If they went to the effort of having 9 children baptised, I'm surprised there was no marriage, but as William is 9 yrs older than Jane, maybe he was already married.I've heard of sailors having a girl in every port, so maybe travellers did too???????....
