searching for John or Margaret Mitchell
« on: Friday 25 February 11 02:45 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help me in finding the grave stones of John Mitchell who died in1866 at the age of 69, or his wife Margaret Mitchell. Both lived in St Pancras, Middlesex. I believe they may be interred in St. Pancras Cemetery Camden. I am hoping to find any reference to his town of origin in Scotland so that we can trace this family tree back further. ::)

Do you have their death certificates to narrow down the dates?

This page found by googling provides a map, however the site is 190 acres so you would need to know the location of the grave(s) to have much hope of finding it. If you have the dates then maybe a phone call?

I have one for John, but not Margaret. (No 56 square 8b?)

So it looks like a group burial on the same day of unrelated people who were living at the workhouse, i.e. not a private plot and therefore, I suspect, unlikley to have a gravestone.  :(

As you have the plot location from the burial record you could try ringing and asking if they can tell you whether there is a marker on the grave.

Thank you. Yes, I didn't realise he was from the workhouse. I had no idea what that meant. Now I do. That would change things a lot, wouldn't it? Thank you for the advice. This has been very helpful. :) :)

It may be that he became ill and was in the Workhouse infirmary, and then died and was buried by them, perhaps his family did not have the means for a burial plot of their own.

Maybe try and pin down the death of his wife and see if that leads to anything new?

This would be very likely as he was around 70 when he died. I will continue to look for any documentation on his wife Margaret. Once again, many thanks.
