Sorry I posted more before checking email that you had replied.
Is it possible Thomas was know as Timothy?
That would fit with the Child arriving 1858
Otherwise he may have arrived with a Brother Dennis 1875.
Only the Death Cert would say how long in NZ.

Hi David,
I make mistakes often and usually google to find where they are :)

Just caught up with your edit TRISH. The Timothy DONOVAN I referred to married Alice Maud BRUMBY, and then they had a child Mary Ellen, who in turn married an EVERITT and had a daughter Margaret Gracie. Timothy & Alice were married the same month Mary Ellen was born.  Does this help? I really couldnt say if Thomas went by Timothy [name wise].

I have a lot of details on the Ashmore ship if you are interested.
My great-grandfather was born coming out on it in 1882.
I found the Surgeon's diary hidden in the back of a museum too.
It was written by Doctor Knight in 1882 onboard the Ashmore so I know what happened every day, what the sailors were like, the storms they faced.
I also have the crew list.
I have years of research on the ship including photos and my book ASHMORE is due to be released in August this year (2018).
Exciting to find other people interested in the same ship.
