following on from finding mabel meekhums, i am having a little bother with her fther henry meekhums. he was born about 1869 in devenport.

i have found a lot out about him, he entered the roal military asylum in 1875 aged about 7. his father was with the 61st regiment of foot. this means his father or mother or both died about 1875, but i cannot find him on the 1871 census.

seen his BIrth Index entry?

Henry Meekhums
Jul-Aug-Sep 1868
District of Plympton St Mary
Volume - 5b
Page - 228

might be in Ireland - see if you can find out where the 61st Regiment were from 1868-1875

His Pension Papers are online in Ancestry: he joined the Worcester Regiment in Sept 1882 as a 14 year old Drummer Boy - height 4' 6", blue eyes.

Theres a ref to his wife and dau Mabel, and ALSO a sister - Mary Ann Meekhums, Ashley Down School, Bristol.

She seems to have been born c1870/1, Devonport (BMD indicates Stoke Damerel), and in the 1881 census - RG11/Piece: 2488 Folio 104 Page 5 Bristol St James & St Paul - "The New Orphan Houses" Ashley Down she's a 'scholar'. In 1891 she is in Service in the Southampton area.

yes i have found mary ann meekhums she was in the  new orphan house in ashley down in 1881 and then in 1891 she is a servant living in hampshire. i cannot find either henry or mary ann in 1871, they could be in ireland with the father.  i think i need to do some more reearch on the ole daddy. all i have to go on though is the surname meekhums, and the regiment.

i found the reference to the 61st regiment of foot, from an entry document of henry meekhums to the military aslylum.

i have just been looking for meekham deaths around 1870-1875 and there really is only one that fits and thats william. then i come on here and you found him for me :)

so it would seem that henry went to the military school in 1875 when his mother wa still alive. maybe he didnt like the new daddy lol!
i wonder whether mary ann went to the orphanage after her mother died or did her mother drop her off there?

a bit more research needed thank you all xxx

you can plug the census refn (PIECE, Folio etc) straight into Ancestry - make sure you have 'Show Advanced Search Options' clicked first, to reveal the boxes you need to populate  ;)
