Fanny Barrett 1856
« on: Sunday 27 February 11 20:25 GMT (UK) »
Hi Guys, I am new to the forum.

My wife and I are trying to research her Great Great Grandmother, Miss Fanny Barrett. We seem to have come up against a brick wall.

She was born to Robert Barrett (1820 - 1883) & Sarah Pryce/Price (1821) They married on June 18th 1842 in Montgomery.

Fanny had a son, who was ilegitimate, named John Thomas Barrett, 24th Sept 1877, Castle St, Montgomery. He was my wife's Great Grandfather. John Thomas was raised by her parents.

We simply cannot find any record of Fanny anywhere after she gave birth to her Son. No further census info in 1881 or 1891, no deaths, or marriages, etc.

We attended the "Who do you think you are LIVE show" on Saturday. We were hoping to get some help there, but we had no luck.

Any help or possible leads would be very gratefully recieved!

Thanks!

Cheers, Ade

HI
looking at the census
I noted that on the 1861 census Fanny is -fanny Barret aged 4yrs RG09/4253/12/17
1871 census RG10 5619/20/14
There is a daughter name Frances b 1857 aged 14yrs
I looked on births and ther is only a Fanny Barrett 3rd qtr 1856 Montgomery vol 11b page 212
Is Fanny and Frances the same girl? has I don't see  a frances birth reg?
My point is are we looking for Fanny or Frances?
cheers cardiff ???

I have the exact same quandary, my great-great-grandmother disappears after the 1881 census, when she was aged 20. I also can't find any marriages or deaths or any prospective people in following censuses.

My thought is that she probably emigrated without trace.

You can try the passengers leaving UK records at FindMyPast, which only start in 1890. There are also a lot of immigration records at Ancestry.

Also worth looking at are the BMD registers of Australia and New Zealand. The former are on Ancestry Worldwide (available at most council libraries and archives) and the latter at:

https://bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/search/

Look for possible marriages and deaths. If you find a possible marriage in the Australian records and then look for a death, as the Australian death index includes the name of parents.

I have found a lot of missing siblings pop up in the above. Strangely, had not thought to look for my gt-gt-grandmother...

Hi
How nice of you to give that advise but I don't know if you have noticed but adrian Stevenson posted this on 27th Feb 2011! he seem to have not been back to look at his info.
I have to say it really gets me goat, when the person you have tried to help does not answer!
But thank you David64 for that input ;)
cheers cardiff :)

His profile says he logged in on the 23rd of March 2011.

Can understand your frustration; although, I have been branded here for not reply to a couple of topics. Personally, it doesn't irk me because I don't tend to revisit posts unless I get the updated thread e-mail alert.

I find all information helpful and well meaning. If you log on and leave it on your tabs, it looks like you havent been on since, whereas the tab is sitting there open as it does with Ancestry.
I too have been looking for her and whe seems to have fell off the earth like many others lost to hiding from the enumerator or maybe simply mis-trnscribed!!

Sorry for the very late reply. My research has all had to be put on hold due to the death of my father in law and my wife having a heart attack. It was not rudeness on my part and I am very grateful for your reply.

I can confirm that Fanny and Francis are one and the same.

Cheers, Ade.
