1852 @ 1854 Births in Manchester
« on: Monday 28 February 11 16:37 GMT (UK) »
Hi there!
I would like to trace the baptism records of Margaret Tomney born 1852 at John Street, Turner Street, Manchester and William Tomney born 1854 at John Street, Turner Street, Manchester. It is quite likely that their younger brother, Edward Stephen Tomney born 1850 on Spike Island, Cork, Ireland was baptised at the same place. Their parents are John Tomney and Mary Walsh.
The family came to England from Ireland about 1851 and were living at 6 Portugal Street, St. George, Manchester in the 1851 census, their religion I believe was Roman Catholic so I am hoping that someone may know which Roman Catholic Church would be the most likely one for the baptisms to be carried out.
Many thanks,
Jean.

Have you had a look at what records are on the MLFHS site? It will give you a few of R.C. churches in the local area.
http://www.mlfhs.org.uk/ Go to "Catholic Record Index "

Another place they could be baptisied at:
St. Mary's (The Hidden Gem)
Mulberry Street
Manchester
M2 6LN

Bless you! That certainly must be him. The problem with the "Tomney" name is that it is mis-spelt more often than not. I had a feeling that St. Patrick's might be the one as it was apparently formed to cater for the influx of Irish Immigrants. I hope that you will be able to obtain the image for me as it is the sponsors that I am particularly interested in.
Many thanks,
Jean.

Dear Migky, Thank you so much for that you are a real star. Do you have any thoughts on the sponsors surnames as they are difficult to read, I think I may have an idea what they are but I would be interested in your opinion especially as they are more than likely Irish?
Do you think that Margaret would have been baptized in the same church and if so would it be possible to trace it? You have been such a huge help in tracking down William's baptism record I hesitate to ask but if you should come across Margaret perhaps you could let me know. I am eternally grateful to you.
Many thanks,
Jean.

Hi, like i said it was hard for me to find William on the original film. They are very poor and extremely hard to read but will have a go for you.
By the way, your welcome  :)
