Thanks for that - any ideas on the best site to get a copy of this marriage certificate as I would like to find out the names of their fathers, etc. and I have drawn a blank before the census of 1841.

Marriages before 1837 don't contain fathers names. The witnesses may be family members if you are lucky.
You would need to see the marriage in the parish register, either at the County Record Office or a local LDS centre.
Alternatively you could put a request on the Northumberland board to see if someone could do a lookup for you.
I take it you have access to all the census and will know the birthplaces of William and Jane.

Thanks for that. Yes, I have all the census results back to 1841 for this family, but am stuck there. I will try the parish records for more information. Cheers

Hi,
Just come across your messages and I might be able to help.
From my tree William Hicks's father was James Hicks, born 28 Feb 1785 in Titchfield, Hampshire and died in 1841 in Newcastle and is mother was Esther Turnbull, born 1786 in North Shields and died 1886. James's father was William Hicks, born 1760 in Titchfield and James mother was Ann Oakes born 1760 in Titchfield.
William and Ann were married 20 Oct 1780 in Titchfield, Portsmouth at St Peters church. I think William is in the 1841 census living in Havant aged 80.
Esther Turnbulls father was Joseph Turnbull, born 1760 in Northumberland and her mother was Jane Blyth born 1765 in Northumberland.
This information was found through ancestry.com and somes other Hicks relations I've been in contact with.
William Hicks and Jane Barnes are my gr gr gr gr grandparents.
Hope this info helps.
Cheers,
Steve Pearson

Esther Turnbull died in 1866, not 1886 (oops), and she was at the Tynemouth Union Workhouse.
In 1841, 1851 and 1861 she was living with Jane Nobbs who was her daughter.
Cheers, Steve

Hi Steve,

You are a star! Thank you very much for that information, it has certainly given me something to look at. How depressing though to think that Esther Turnbull ended up in a Workhouse! On the bright side , I am delighted to find another "cousin" - the hicks family seem to have been pretty prolific. Did you get all this from ancestry.co.uk?

Hi Paula,
No problem, any time. I got the info from Martine (SMOOTHIE in rootschat.com). She is also on ancestry and is also another cousin so it was a combination of both rootschat and ancestry really. She has helped me a lot on the hicks side as she sent me evening chronicle pages about the hicks side of the family as well as pictures of some of their headstones from the cemetery beside heworth roundabout. The hicks family have certainly been an interesting family to research as they used to run pubs at bill point (as you probably know already) and were in trouble with the police where they threatend to shoot a policeman called PC Pigg. Let me know your email address and I will send you what info I have, if you wish.
By the way both my Dad and Grandad's middle names were Hicks.
Best wishes, Steve
