Cumberlan Place Name? <<COMPLETED>>
« on: Wednesday 02 March 11 11:46 GMT (UK) »
I have found my3xGreat grandfather, Jospeh Todd on the 1851 census at 35 Duke St, Manchester, age 63, Revenue Officer with his 4 children.

Unfortunately this census was damaged and is difficult to read. To of his children were born in Liverpool, and one in Tadcaster.

I have found a possible marriage on Family Search in 1820 in Heversham, Westmorland but I think I can just about make out Cumberland as part of the place of birth on the 1851 census - see attached image.

My knowledge of towns and villages in Cumberland is very limited but hopefully someone with better geographical knowledge may be able to interpret the place name.
Craven, tarporley cheshire; hulme manchester.
Meredith, manchester.
Scanlon, sligo ireland.
Barwick, grove & reading berks; wolverhampton staffs, manchester.
Simpson, pately bridge appletreewick & halifax yorks; manchester.
Dixon, storriths bolton abbey addingham & embsay yorks; manchester

FindMyPast doesn't have the original, but does have the transcription provided by the Manchester & Lancashire FHS.

This typewritten page shows the place of birth of Joseph (snr) as Hebron Sudgl....., and that of son William as Tober, Cumberland.

The other 3 children have Liverpool as a place of birth.
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

My instinctive reaction was that the second word is Bridge ( with the e either missing or invisible).

I think it could be Sebergham Bridge, which is in the far north of Cumberland. ( again, the spelling of Sebergham looks a bit iffy but it could be worth a try)

If Joseph's age on the 1851 census is accurate, he would have been born around 1787/8. There is an extracted entry, on Family Search, for a Joseph Todd baptism in 1787 at Castle Sowerby, which is very close to Sebergham Bridge.

This doesn't count out a marriage in Heversham as he obviously moved around quite a lot.

Jen :)

Many thanks to you both for the suggestions.  Using Jen's info on the christening of a Joseph Todd in 1787 at Castle Sowerby, son of John Todd & Sarah Todhunter, I found the parents marriage 24 Jan 1785 in Wigton.
Looking up Wigton St Marys register transcript on line it says that John Todd was of the Parish of Sebergham.  Maybe if I can find the Parish Register for Heversham for Joseph's marriage it may give either his parish or his father's name.
Geting there slowly.
Regards
Ken

Three baptisms of Josephs children on the Lan Opc site at Liverpool St. Peter :

29 Jul 1821. Joseph Todd, son of Joseph Todd and Elizabeth, Excise Officer, of Olive St.

21 Sep 1823. Elizabeth Todd, daughter of Joseph Todd and Elizabeth, Officer of Excise, of Oliver St.

5 Feb 1826. John Fell Todd, son of Joseph Todd and Elizabeth, Excise Officer, of Olive St.

Given John 1826 middle name, I'd say the marriage of Joseph Todd and Elizabeth Fell, 1 Nov 1820, Heversham, Westmorland, must be the right one.

Alan.
Northumberland - Smith, Willis,
Durham - Rogerson, Child
Cumberland - Irving, Hill
North Yorkshire - Layfield,

Thanks Alan.  I'm now putting a request on the Westmorland Forum to see if anyone has access to the marriages for Haversham and hope there is more info than on Family Search.
