It's worth remembering that "Ag Lab" covered numerous skills e.g. wheelwrights.  So if someone had a successful business in a trade that was not apprenticed and classed as Ag Lab by the instructions of the early census then it isn't such a leap to see how they could possibly buy a bit of land.
