Occupation on 1841 Census
« on: Saturday 05 March 11 13:24 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know what the occupation for Edward Cavill is? It seems more like an abbreviation?

Thank you!

(As a side note, how possible do we think it for a 50 year old woman to have a 4 year old in 1841?)

IND - of INDEPENDANT means - maybe living on rental income, an Annuity or similar

1841 doesnt show relationships, so the little 'un could be a grandchild.

Thomas will be 4, but the others could be rounded down to the next 5. So Edward could be 55-59; Ann 50-54 and Charlotte 15-19.

Or he might be the child of an older daughter/son living away from home.  However, not impossible to be a mother at 46 even in those days, if Ann was actually 50.

Ann was 63 in 1851. Therefore as Ken said, the enumerator had rounded her age down, as was the norm in 1841.

So she would have been 49 when Thomas was born (if she is actually his mother). I was also thinking that he is likely to be the son of another child who'd left home (Charlotte would surely be too young?) but I suppose anything's possible. It appears that he was raised as a son though.

Thanks for the all the help :)

Have a look at this, unless something happened to the older Thomas, it seems more likely Thomas jnr was a grandchild.

Christening : 20th December 1821
