Hitchin & Southill lookups please
« on: Sunday 06 March 11 08:38 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to confirm a birth 4th May 1766 in Hitchin for Charlotte Fullwood. IGI has a bapt in Southill dated 15th May 1766 with parents Thomas and Sarah which could be my family but an ancestral file on familysearch says these two are the same.

Another sibling was Charles Fullwood Christened 4th jan 1769 in Southill any other info on him would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Terry

I can't see an entry for a Charlotte Fulwood in Hitchin on either the IGI or Ancestral File. Later Found it on the Pedigree Resource File. Birth in Hitchin, baptised in Southill. It smells. Thomas is shown as born in Hitchin, married in Warwick, then back to Southill. Iffy! As there are no birth records pre 1837, just baptisms, there's no way to confirm the alleged birth.

There is a baptism in Southill on  15 May 1766, daughter of Thomas and Sarah, shoemaker.  There's also a baptism of Charles Fulwood in Southill on 3 Jan 1769 son of Thomas and Sarah, shoemaker. On 3 June 1768 there's a baptism of Decima Fulwood daughter of Thomas & Charlotte, husbandman, which I wonder about. Was the mother really Charlotte or is the PR in error? I suspect it is

There are no Fulwood marriages or burials in Southill

Thomas and Sarah Fulwood baptised four daughters in Hitchin from 1771 to 1776 - Lyddy, Sarah, Sophia and Desimus. I don't have burials for Hitchin for that time but it would be interesting to see if Decima baptised in Southill was buried there.

It looks to me like the same family - Hitchin is only 10 miles from Southill. You need to post on the Herts board to get details of the Hitchin baptisms to see if Thomas was a shoemaker.

I've found a tree on Anc* but not on family search; did she marry Jonas Kershaw in Feb 1788 at Bishopsgate

The IGI has extracted entries for both Southill, Beds 1766 - 1769 & then Hitchin, Herts 1771 - 1776 of children of Thomas & Sarah Fullwood. It seems likely this is the same family as it's only a short distance between the two places & naming your children Decima & Desimus is a bit of a clue. Cannot see a married for the parents though, there is a suggested entry in Warwicks dated 1763 of Thomas Fullwood to Sarah Warren.

(David - I was expecting something from you, we must have been typing up our bits at same time !)

PS there's a no.of trees on Anc* naming her Falwood, Fallwood - interestingly one is the Partridge Plus family tree - where's this going to lead me ?  OK it's Staffordshire - so nothing to do with my lot.

Glad we reached the same conclusion John!

Just been reading Terry's thread in the Common Room at http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,515845.0.html which seems to make it clear that the Hitchin family were from Warwick, and the three Fulwood baptisms in Southill were probably the children named in the Indemnity certificate

David,  I had just found an entry for Indem/Settlement at Southill in 1767 for Thomas, Sarah, Elizabeth & Charlotte in the Beds Poor Law Papers index produced by the BFHS. The settlement cert in Terry's thread is dated 1770 & for St Mary's Hitchin. So has Terry got this cert from Beds Archives.

Thanks guys, as you've seen, the settlement certificate on the common room board gives three children. Eliabeth was born in Warwick in 1763, Charlotte (who is my original question) 1766 and Charles. After the settlement there were 4 more kids all born in Hitchin. I didn't know he was a shoemaker so thanks for that, i've been trying to piece together why he moved from Warwick to Hitchin/Southill so all these snippets are helpful.

Yes Charlotte did marry Jonas Kershaw and i believe the Kershaws were a notable family in Hitchin in the Coaching business.

Thanks also for the conveyance that might also help me.
