Very little of the pre-1841 census returns still exist - and in any case they were of very little value to Family Historians.

Questions related to housing stock, population size, and numbers involved in occupations.

Sorry - can you clarify your post - you first say 1801-1841 then say after 1841

The earliest online census is 1841 but censuses exist prior to then but only in certain counties.  These earlier censuses have little value in tracing family history as they contain different info

You have not posted on a particular county board so it's difficult to say

See http://www.histpop.org.uk/pre41/listings_a.pdf and "Pre-1841 Censuses & Population Listings" by Colin R. Chapman. Also http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/census/index.jsp
The 1841 Census is the first one that is of any practical use for family history research.

Hi Damian,

A few districts in the pre 1841 censuses include named individuals,
and are usually held in index form at County record office level.

Some of these are listed in the pdf file which Stan has linked to,
with a reference to where the records are held. 'H' stands for
head of household only, and 'I' for all individuals in the household.

My neighbours were fortunate enough to find their ancestors in
Wellington Shropshire in, I believe, 1821, thanks to the pointer
provided in the file mentioned.
