Unusual Roadside Structures on the R676
« on: Thursday 10 March 11 10:17 GMT (UK) »
Alongside the R676 Road northward towards Carrick on Suir there are upwards of 20 Low Stone Encosures.  The encosures are mostly on the left side of the road going northward from Lemybrien.
The three sided enclosure is substationally built of stone at least 10 metres long about 2 metres high at the back and with curving ends.
I have been intrigued for years and wonder if anyone knows their purpose and age.

They were stone depots and possibly unique to Co. Waterford. They accommodated stone breakers, who manually crushed rocks into rubble to be used in the construction of the roads. All the main roads built in the county during the 19th century had these depots placed along the route with a distance of one furlong between them. Possibly a couple of hundred left, mostly on minor roads. They were phased out at the beginning of the 20th century. The R676 is probably the best example.
Weldon - Waterford.
Smale, Small - Sussex, Kent.
Treacy - Waterford, U.K, New York. South Africa
Van Eesbeck - Waterford, Limerick, Belgium, U.S
Purcell -  Kilkenny, Waterford
Flood - Waterford.
O'Neill - Waterford, Kilkenny, Wexford.
Nicholson - Waterford

Many thanks for your interesing reply.

Now, can we imagine a group of convicts or underpaid labourers moving from structure to structure in all weathers.
I'm going up the road in June to visit my family and see the "Tall Ships" at Waterford so this will be and opportunity to take pictures for the record.
Kind regards
Norman
