There were two men named William Junkin with a wife Elizabeth in the area so to rule out later possibilities here's the William Junkin who was a prosperous farmer living at Tureagh townland-

Although I did find two marriages. Elizabeth Junkin (gault) 1872 to a Thomas Smyth  which really can't be her. Or, an Elizabeth Jenkins to a Matthew Patterson in 1885, both in Larne. The strange thing is I can't find any combination of the Jenkins/Patterson names on the 1901 census. Anyone with any ideas of where to get info on the 1885 marriage, and out of interest who the Elizabeth is in the earlier 1872 marriage?

There are 188 marriages in Larne registration district in 1885 on Irish Genealogy.
Only 2 with groom named Matthew (Matthew Patterson to Lavinia Patterson and Matthew Forsythe to Mary Finlay.
Only 1 for a Jenkins (Alexander Clawson to Elizabeth Jenkins)
None for anyone called Junkin.

Matthew Patterson, wife Levina and family in 1901-
https://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Duncairn_Ward/Lilliput_Street/958728/

Also checked GRONI's index without finding a Patterson/Jenkins marriage.
So, no idea where you found that marriage.

Hi, wow, thank you for all this information. I have some of the information provided but you have made it more clear for me. I don't believe my Grandfather knew of his half-sister Lily Smyth. If he did, he did not tell my mother. We have always known of the Gault family as we occasionally visited their graves in Glynn. The Richmond name doesn't ring any bells but it is interesting that a John Hunter McNeill has appeared.

A lot to get through, very much appreciated.

Kind regards

This witness may or may not be the Samuel Richmond father of Elizabeth Gault Jenkins/Smyth later McKinstry but it is interesting that the groom is a John McNeill (John Hunter McNeill married Sarah Smyth)-
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1892/10649/5879931.pdf

Hi, I see that Sarah's father is named as William so I'm wondering what the connection is to Thomas Smyth?

Although I have come across this for the John McNeill (b - 06/03/1871), my possible gr-grandfather. Parents are a Robert John McNeill and Mary Jane McNeill formerly Hunter. Interesting!!

Please reread both my post and the registration. Sarah's father is listed as James Smith which seems to be an error as all evidence points to it being Thomas Smyth.

Here's a bit on the McNeills- not sure what happened to them after 1901-

I notice on the birth record of John in 1903 the mothers maiden name was Gingles, then crossed out and Jenkins substituted. There are Elizabeth Gingles born in Larne.

SS

Hi All, on the name Gingles I found with interest a connection to Samuel Richmond. Presuming this is the same Samuel who died in Larne in 1903 aged 32 (Workhouse). I found a birth record for a Samuel Richmond in 1871, Ballysnod, Larne. Father Henry and mother Jane Gingles.

Now,

I have been pondering over all of the information to try and look at the possibility that John Hunter McNeill is my great-grandfather. I will start by saying that you have helped a family in New Zealand discover the correct John McNeill, brother of the Andrew McNeill who emigrated to NZ (sons of Robert John McNeill) that you have listed. The information they provided to me was John McNeill married to Ellen Wylie (father William) possibly also on Main Street, Larne.  Andrew's son Tom is the DNA match to my grandfather through Tom's daughter.

I see that John Hunter McNeill is a widower on the 1901 census which I presume is the reason their children are with Sarah's parents. This started a search for the death records of Sarah and John Hunter McNeill. I presume Sarah passed away between Jeanie's birth in 1899 and the census in 1901. I have checked Family Search, Irish Genealogy and Emerald Ancestors which have all come up blank.  Any thoughts?

Again, many thanks for all your help.

Kind regards
