A SMITH Problem
« on: Tuesday 15 March 11 21:53 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find a bit more about the husband of my 2x great aunt, Kate Sabina "Kitty" JOHNSON. Kitty was born in 1914, died 1993 - I have all of her details. I don't believe she had any children.

Kitty married Charles Edward SMITH in 1939 in Laxton, Nottinghamshire. On their marriage certificate, Charles was 27 (ie. born c.1912), a Shop Assistant, residence Claypole, Lincolnshire. His father was Henry SMITH, deceased, Publican.

I believe Charles died in 1985 near Newark - the death registration gives his DOB as 14 Jul 1912. But even with these details I can't find anything about his parents. Looking on FreeBMD he might be the Charles E. Smith born Sep qtr. 1912, mms TODD (Grantham), but I can't find any nearby marriage between a Henry Smith & Ms. Todd. Other than the marriage cert there is no indication Charles was even originally from Lincs.

Anyone any ideas?

Unless I have misread something the birth ref you have found can't be him,

Charles E Johnson can't be your man, he would have been registered as Charles E Smith at birth??

Sorry that was my mistake...will correct it now. I did see that possible sister, but as I said I can't find any marriage between a Henry Smith and Todd in the area, so I don't know if it's the right one.

Thanks,
Alexander

Not unknown to lie about father on marriage certificate, especially if illegitimate, easy then to say he was deceased. I only found a few Henry/Harry Smith publicans on the last census and none seem to fit your criteria.
Did find this---Marriage Jun 1911 Bingham 7b/1061 Harry Smith and Annie Todd.
Annie born Granby Notts 1885, with parents Charles and Maria. (1891 census)
AREA, Nottinghamshire. Lincolnshire. Staffordshire. Leicestershire, Morayshire.
Paternal Line--An(t)(c)liff(e).Faulkner. Mayfield. Cant. Davison. Caunt. Trigg. Rawding. Buttery. Rayworth. Pepper. Otter. Whitworth. Gray. Calder. Laing.Wink. Wright. Jackson. Taylor.
Maternal Line--Linsey. Spicer. Corns. Judson. Greensmith. Steel. Woodford. Ellis. Wyan. Callis. Warriner. Rawlin. Merrin. Vale. Summerfield. Cartwright.
Husbands-Beckett. Heald. Pilkington. Arnold. Hall. Willows. Dring. Newcomb. Hawley

Thank you larkspur. If Charles was a blood relative I might just get the certificate and keep my fingers crossed. However I think I'll leave this one for a while to see if anything else turns up.

That marriage found looks promising, so I'll see if I can find any more about that Henry & Annie Smith.
