Confirming ancestors
« on: Wednesday 16 March 11 07:56 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
As a "newby" to genealogy, I am starting my search with my grandfather's birth certificate. From the details on this form, I believe I have found online, the correct father and his details, but how do I know for certain before I order any certificates? I am thinking that my grandfather  (born in Nov 1891) could be tied in as a son on the relevant census. So, if I provide the details, is there anyone out there who has access to the census on London, England for 1901 or 1911 that would show head of household, wife, children etc? Help over this hurdle (probably the first of many ha!ha!) would be much appreciated. Thanks, Cushy

Post the names and dates, and the helpful people on RC will be sure to help!
Many of us have access to different sorts of records and/or are experienced in gaining the best from any datbase.

But we aren't allowed to post details of the 1911 census - that's due to copyright reasons  :(

Check with your local library, also.  For example, my local has Ancestry library edition (on computers in the libraries only), which would include 1901 census access, and also gives access to newspaper databases (from home, if you have a library card), and things like the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.

1911 census can be searched here:

Welcome to rootschat Cushy.

If you have your grandfather's birth certificate, as you rightly say, we might be able to locate his whole family in the 1901 census. Something else we cross match with is the father's occupation when searching for the family on the censuses.

If you give us the details from the birth certificate we will try to get you started.

If its a full certificate it should also show his mother's name and her maiden name which should help to pin point his parent's marriage certificate.  This in turn should give the bride and groom's ages and THEIR father's names and occupations which will help to find his parent's birth certificates.  And so you can go further on, building up info step by step.  ;)

Thanks KGarrard, will post available details as suggested. Would "Beginners" be the best place to post? I am still browsing and learning about this whole website and uncertain.

Hi jorose, thanks for the advice. I live about 40km outside of town in country W.A. in Australia. But I still think it may be worth investigating, so I will visit the library next time I'm in town.
