Hawkies Hall, Tynemouth parish - completed with thanks
« on: Friday 18 March 11 00:52 GMT (UK) »
An 1832 burial in Christ Church, Tynemouth states that the man died at Hawkies Hall.

I can't find any reference to this place.  Any ideas, anyone?

There is a Hawkeys Lane in North Shields. Many years ago I used to go swimming in the baths there.  It is where the old Tynemouth Jubilee Infirmary used to be.

You can see Hawkey's Hall on the map at http://www.dmm-gallery.org.uk/maps/p007os1.htm north of Preston Colliery.

It was at the junction of Queen Alexandra Road West and Hawkey's Lane, where the Tyne Metropolitan College is.

Thanks, both

I knew there was a Hawkeys Lane in North Shields (though it would have helped if I had that spelling of it!) and I assumed there would be a connection.

Thanks for the link, Stan.  I am the world's worst internet searcher - never can find anything - and I certainly wouldn't have thought to look on DMM.

All I need to do now is find out what the place was and why someone from Blyth would have died there.

I gave that link rather than finding it on http://gis.durham.gov.uk/website/interMAP/viewer.htm by entering the coordinates 434714, 569013 in to search, which, by the way, shows that the position of Preston Colliery is wrong on the DMM map   :)

It was a farm, in the 1861 Census it is called Hawkey Hall Farm, and the occupier is a farm labourer.

Thanks, Stan, that's interesting - also puzzling as my man was certainly not a farm worker.  He was from a long line of mariners and river pilots.

Perhaps he was simply visiting friends.

He died in 1832 so I'll track back to 1841 - see who was there then.

So how do you find co-ordinates when you don't know where the place is?  :-\

You have to find the place first, by searching around the area on the map and hopefully coming across it, you can then read the coordinates of the cursor over the location.
