1891 census lookup please

needing some help please... i have been tracking william colligan. he was born abt1850-52. iin the 1861 census i found him age 11, with his parents. by the1871 census, he was in glasgow.
i know this is asking alot, but would anyone be able to look up a few census for me..........
william colligan 1871, glasgow goran, lanarkshire
william colligan 1881 workington cumberland, england
william colligan 1891 ecclesmachan, west lothian
william colligan 1901 uphall wwest lothian
the reeason i ask is, i thought this man was my grandfather,...but its looking to be my great grandfather.......which throws things out of whack a bit.......he had 2 wifes that i know of...margaret armstrong and jane lowrie......hmmmm, which one is great grandma ? any help would be so so appreciated....kind reguards heather

Hi Heather, these are the breakdowns of the various census returns:-

1871 Boarder occ Assistant Draper
1881 With Jane occ Clothier & Outfitter
1891 With Jane and Frances D Colligan aged 2 occ Shale Miner!!
1901 with Jane and Frances D occ Clerk

Jane states she was born in Stoneykirk Wigtonshire.

I cannot get into the originals of the Scottish returns, but if you need any more help, I will try my best ok.

hello keyboard 86......hmmmm how very interesting and thank you so so much......... my granfather, also a william, wasnt born till 1883..........i am so confused......this is what i have, i just cant make sense of it,
                      francis colligan born ireland
his son......william colligan born 1821 ireland,married agnes hail or kale.
their son..william colligan born abt 1850-52, with the 2 marriages jane lowrie
                  and margaret armstrong
so i am looking for his son...william colligan born 1883 who married sara mckelvie,
then we will have my dad, james mckelvie colligan born 1920-21.
but if william was still with jane in 1901, it doesnt fit.....but it is the right family
how confusing.....i better get a pen and paper and try to figure this out

Hi Heather, on your other thread where you were searching the earlier census returns, a Son Meridith was included, so the William in his household  aged 17 on the 1901 is not the William Colligan you are after, would that be correct?

ok i have an idea.....i have a francis colligan, he was 14 yrs old in 1861, living with his parents in bo'ness, by 1871 ,his parents are in shotts but he's not with them....so could any one do a look up for francis colligan 1891 , bo'ness or shotts, then i might be able to see if he has a son william and go from there......thank you

meredeth had a brother william...., he's the william married to the jane....i'm figuring he's not my g grandad......now meredeth had a son william,  he was born in 1884 in shotts........it could be him i'm looking for, because the william i am looking for was born 1885. meredeth and william also had a brother francis, so i need to check if he had a son william as well........this family researching is so frustrating, but i'm hooked, i just cant stop !!!!!! it's so addictive, i just need to know....ha ha , kind reguards heatherr

Well if you Francis Colligan was also born in Lanarkshire ( Clarkston ) then he is in Lanarkshire in 1891 with Wife Catherine, and children Esther 9 and Thomas L 2, over to you Heather, I think the purchase of a few birth/mariage certs may be the order of the day!!
