Dear David
I just received information from the Lincolnshire Archives, about the Will of
Thomas Trew the elder of Market Deeping, dyer, dated 1666 and I will be ordering this Will in the next week or so.  Thanks to you for providing this lead.  I am hoping that he is my g.g.g.g.g.g.g. grandfather!

I have photos of headstones in the Market Deeping churchyard which were taken for me by a Bingham descendant a few years ago now (my g.g. grandparents in Market Deeping were Ambrose True and Elizabeth Bingham who married there in 1803).  Three of their children are mentioned on headstones - 1) Robert True and his wife Sarah nee Battram. 2) also on the same headstone was Robert's sister Mary, who married Daniel Perkins then married Richard Atwood/Attwood and 3) Thomas True and his wife Rachel nee Berry and three of their children who died in infancy.  My g.grandfather, Samuel Pickering True, was a brother to Robert, Mary and Thomas.  Sam came to Australia in 1849 with his wife, Mary Ann Luff who he married at Stamford in 1847.
Three daughters of Robert True and wife Sarah are buried with headstones in a newer part of St Guthlac's churchyard.  They are:- 1) Martha Pickering True 2) Betsey True and 3) Sarah True.  These three ladies were spinster dressmakers and lived in Church Street, Market Deeping.  They died in the 1920s and 1930s.  They were first cousins to my grandfather, who was born in Australia in 1865.   Thanks for all your great help.
from Aurora.

Hello Aurora,

I had a look through my History of Market Deeping but couldn't spot any of the names. However, I tried the new Newspaper Archive and found a few references. There is a subscription to see the image, so it is best to find as many references as possible and then take out the cheapest, which only lasts for two days.

For some reason, the same criteria doesn't always produce the same results. Most tend to be bankruptcies, BMD or court cases.

Try the following, including the quotation marks:-

"robert true"
"samuel true"
"richard attwood, mary perkins"

Regards,
David

Dear David
Thanks for the info on the British newspaper website.  I have had a quick look and will certainly be buying time to purchase some of the news items (On various branches of my family, not just the Trues).  Actually I only read about this site a few days ago in an Australian genealogical magazine but had not got around to looking at it.   from Aurora.

Hi
the Hearth Tax returns for Lincolnshire are held at the National Archives under E179, you can view the original records there or ask somebody to do it for you. Some of the Lincolnshire Heath tax records are though in poor condition. The Hearth Tax returns for Market Deeping survive for 1662 and I have looked at my copy, which lists a Thomas Trewe with 2 hearths. There are no other True's in Market Deeping in 1662, but vitally the tax was listed under the householder, so other members of the family may have lived there. The Ture family paid the tax and were not discharged by certificate.
Hope this helps
