Can RootsChat help me?
« on: Wednesday 09 June 04 19:48 BST (UK) »
Please, please will some kind person help me.  I know I should have hit the beginner button but I don't know how to get back.  I don't know if rootschat will help me in my research.  I have so many brick walls I think I have built a castle.  Feels like swimming through mud and I get quite despondent.  However, like most history minded people once I had researched my village I got hooked on the people.  Then I got hooked on my own ancestry.  Now I'm hooked and bricked in!  Names I am researching:  Leavitt, Millward, Dyer, Smithson, Hemming, Bewley, Hyde, Brain & Thick.  Counties: Hampshire, Dorset, Berkshire, Yorkshire, Lancashire and USA.

If there is anyone out there - could someone give me a few pointers.  Thanks in advance - Di :

Hi there,

And Welcome to Rootschat.  First of all DON'T PANIC.  ;D

I have split off your message for you,  it is never a problem to do something like this for a user.

Next,  for the Rootschatters to be able to help you,  you must ask specific questions.  Genealogy is such a broad topic there is loads of advice to give,  some of it will be useless to you,  unless we know how far you have got,  and what your brick walls (or castle,  love that one 8)) are.

So,  concentrate on one branch at a time,  and tell us what you know,  and what you want to find out.

I am sure we will be able to help you demolish your casle,  or a tower or two at least.  :D

Thank you rootschat.  Looking for information on Thomas Hemming born 1814 in Abingdon, Berkshire.  He was married to Louisa (--?) but can find no record of his birth or marriage.  His father was Richard.

Also looking for any information at all on John Marston Leavitt born in Holand on 11/11/1870.  His family lived in Canada but not sure where.

Also looking for Dyers from Portsea/Gosport/Southampton.

Looking for James Millward of Birmingham.

Other names:  Smithson (North Yorks); Bewley (Yorks); Smith (Yorks); Mortimore (Southampton); Hyde (East Hendred, Berks.

Thank you - Di

Where did you get this information?  Was it a census?

Hi again...there is also a marriage of a Thomas in Abingdon but cannot be the one above as he was only 14 1856. The Thomas you are looking for would have been about 42....he could have married at an old age or be on second marriage, or possibly yet another Thomas in Abingdon at same time as the other two. Theres cracks in the plaster between the bricks now....we'll get there in the end!!!!

         best wishes cheryle.f
