Death Notice Look Up COMPLETED
« on: Tuesday 22 March 11 20:12 GMT (UK) »
If anyone is in Newcastle Central Library please could they look up the Evening Chonicle death notice for Mary Hamilton of Settlingstones. She died in September 1900 aged 87.
I am hoping that she is the widow of James.
Thank you
Lilym

Settlingstones lay within the " township" of Allerwash, within the Parish of Newbrough. The Parish of Newbrough had been born out of the Parish of Warden.

Today Settlingstones lies about 2 miles north of Haydon Bridge, Ordnance Survey , Grid Ref NY840680.

So would someone who died up there, end up in the Evening Chronicle???? Seems a bit far out.

I don't think it was an exact science as to what deaths the Evening Chronicle published.

I think if a customer was willing to pay for the entry, the Chronicle would take it !

Browsing through the Index of Evening Chronicle Death Notices ( on line http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/NBL/DeathNotices  ) shows deaths from anywhere/everywhere, eg Wooler, Embleton, Sedgefield, Middlesbrough, seaham Harbour and as far away as Alexandria, Queensland, Madeira etc

The Index of death notices published in the Chronicle is being put on-line by volunteers. So far the ladies have covered 2 Nov 1885 - 31 Dec 1906. The index includes name, age, date of Chronicle, place of death.

And as it happens, it includes the entry for Mary Hamilton of Settlingstones- with date of 26 Sept 1900. I think this is the date of publication of the Chronicle, not the date of death !

Thanks Salt and Pepper, Thursday will be fine.

Settlingstones is just a hamlet, north west of Newbrough and north east of Haydon Bridge. If Mary is the person I am hoping she is, the widow of James, and at her age she may be living with a daughter. As she had severa,l as usual, it is a case of which one.

Thank you very much.

Just what I was looking for. A trawl through the 1901 census might reveal which daughter.
