I'm not sure, I read it as William being Richard's son and if William is in Ireland (?) Was there a war in Ireland in the 1630s? Shall have to google! And if William dies then his portion goes to William's brother, and Richard's other son, John. If that's the case then I can't say it reveals an awful lot.

I went on SEAX earlier to search the baptisms in North Benfleet to see if there was a William in the 1540s (might be wishful thinking that early) or a Richard in 1570s, but they don't go back further than the early-mid 1600s  :(

Hi, just a little update (putting my thoughts up here so they are together) I've gone through the baptisms methodically of Theydon Garnon of the 1560s/70s and 80s and no Lakes. So it might appear that the Lakes came to Theydon Garnon in the late 16th Century...

That said, it doesn't necessarily support the Lakes of Great Fanton Hall as there are various people in this register 'of London' so perhaps the ones from Dagenham and Upminster are still a possibility.

Posting yet again. Sorry for the length, but if you read I would really love some help on interpreting this 'situation'.

I'm need of anyone who's still subscribed to this thread's help. I have looked at wills of other William Lakes nearby, and the only one where the dates would match is from Dagenham. He doesn't leave as much as William Lake from Theydon Garnon which makes me wonder if he originated from Fanton Hall.

I've also looked at Richard Lake's will - needs a bit of deciphering but I managed to work out the main gist. He leaves roughly as much William, and mentions his' brother William'.

Saw John Lake's will - 8 pages of A3 writing so didn't get a chance to read the whole thing. I'll have to go back again.

There are one or two other points that lean towards William Lake in Theydon Garnon being Richard and John's brother and Richard (c.1570)'s father. However, one rather large aspect is that if William made his will and/or died in 1591, then why Richard making bequests to his brother William in 1599?

Would really appreciate some second opinions!  :)
