Carpenter / Joiner

Hi

Am I right in assuming that a joineris a slightly more qualified carpenter?
(This is in the early C19th)

Thanks

Paul

A joiner was (and is) someone who made the wooden structures inside buildings e.g. door and window frames.  A carpenter was a more general term for someone making things out of wood.  I wouldn't have thought you could talk in terms of one being more qualified than the other - just different.

Richards in Lea, Gloucestershire, then London.
Williamson in Leith, Vickers in Nottingham.
Webb in Bildeston and Colchester.
Wesbroom in Kirby le Soken.
Ellington in Harwich.

Thanks Suttontrust!

I did see something somewhere (can't remember where) indicating that a joiner was more likely to be apprenticed and therefore qualified, than a carpenter, but I don;t think it makes much difference.

best wishes

On a related note - when would apprenticeships for joiners have started?

My gtx4grandfather was a joiner (as were the next 4 generations, including my grandfather, although some were cabinet makers and one was a wood carver, which i think may have been a bit superior to a joiner  :) ) and it would be helpful to know if I could look for apprenticeship records for him. I know he was born c1774, in Derbyshire, but I can't find any record before his marriage in 1798. He may have learnt his trade from his father, but if he was the first joiner in the family, that might help me to find out who he was and where he was born.

Thanks.

a joiner is and was a higher paid tradesman than a carpenter and as you so rightly state was a time served tradesman as opposed to a carpenter who was more likely to be someone who 'fell' into that line of work.
