On a related note - when would apprenticeships for joiners have started?

One of my ancestors was a cabinet maker, born in the 1850s. He started his apprenticeship when he was 13. He lived with his master, and was emunerated as such.

There is also a livery company for joiners:

http://www.joinersandceilers.co.uk/contact.asp

Their website says they originally had a close association with saddlers since they were subcontracted by saddlers to make the saddle bows, probably from  Saxon times! The joiners don't appear to have info. of direct use to genealogists but I am enquiring about this.
