Hi all,

On the RChat Resources board for South Australia, there's a link to a free to search index of S A births up to 1854.  On that link for Harriet's nee surname the index spells her m.s. as STACEY.  This is for a birth for:

Fanny HARMER, born 9 Nov 1844 at Thebarton, father Edward Harmer, mother Harriet Stacey.

There are many links on the SA resources board, including one for how to obtain free transcriptions of historic BDM certificates that were registered in the Adelaide district.

Cheers,  JM

A problem here is that Portfield, Sussex didn't have their own church at this time so her baptism could be anywhere in the vicinity.

As Harriet Stacey married 1819 North Mundham, and Portfield didn't have their own church, it would seem likely that she may have been baptised in North Mundham.

There are 2 submitted entries on familysearch for a Harriet Stacy baptised at North Mundham - one in 1799 who married a Henry Ireland in 1824 so not her.   This is the other:

Harriet Stacy bp.17/6/1804, dau. of Martha Stacy.

This looks a good bet.

That's interesting Annette,

I wonder what primary record gives Martin the birth place as Portfield ... Could there be any other Portfield in England around that time....  I am not ever keen on submitted entries unless there's a primary record to support it.

I am in NSW Australia, so my understanding of Geography for England is not as reliable as it could be  ;D

Portfield, Sussex was a place in it's own right so no reason why this shouldn't be given as her birthplace - they just didn't have their own church until much later in the 19c.

Would seem a search of North Mundham parish records would be the next move but they are not on-line alas for this time frame.
