Realize how confusing this sounds.  Hope this helps.
gggrandmother: Maria Canning b. ? Ireland 1940 married someone with surname of Canning and in England gave birth to only child Ellen.
Ellen married James Hughes in England and they had first daughter (Ellen also) in England.  Came over to US in 1894 and had three more children: Annie, George and my grandma, Florence L.
I'm trying to find out what Maria's maiden name was and also what the first name of the Canning she married was.  Thanks and sorry for the
length.

From a quick BMD search from 1858 to 1868:

Dec 1862
Liverpool
John Canning married (possible match of) Maria Neville

Sept 1862
Birkenhead
Thomas Canning married (possible match of) Maria Abernethy

It could be a start!

Ellen's birth certificate will list the full names of her parents which would allow you to determine if either of those 2 possible marriages are her parents.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
