census confusion
« on: Thursday 31 March 11 21:23 BST (UK) »
I have a Frederick Charles Barrington Boam born 1869 to James Boam and Elizabeth Boot,  Litchurch St Peter Derbyshire. I couldn't find this family on any of the census until I discovered they were all under the name of Boot (including James) in the 1871 1881 1891 and 1901 census. Frederick was married to Eva Freestone 1917 using the surname Boam, joined the army using the surname Boam and died in Canada using the surname Boam. I cannot find a marriage for his parents James Boam and Elizabeth Boot. Do you think this could be the problem? James held down the same job as Engine Tenter for many years and they did not move far.

Hi Freebee, non marriage co-habbitation was quite common then. The cost of marrying itself being one such drawback as banns being needed to be read in both home parishes cost a lot.
