David Rollo - "Drowned in Berwick Bay"
« on: Tuesday 05 April 11 10:04 BST (UK) »
Hi

I've hit a bit of a brick wall, and am now trying this page to ask for some assistance.

I have an entry in the Family Tree for a David Rollo, Shipmaster, born at Balmerino, Fife on 23 Sep 1810 who was "Drowned - in Berwick Bay" on 3 Mar 1854. The information comes from the Fife Family History Society pre-1855 Death Index and has been extracted from the Mitchell Monumental Inscriptions - presumably taken from a (commemorative) family gravestone inscription.

There's no mention of the name of any vessel and I can't find anythng so far in the local papers from the time ... although I will keep looking!

Following a post in the "Common Room", and the responses I received there, it appears that the"Berwick Bay" mentioned is the one off the Scottish coast?  Threre is another in Louisiana, USA!

My hope now is that someone in Berwickshire ... local knowledge is a great resource ... may be able to add a bit more to the story for me.

Regards

Aye mair questions than answers in a world where the past was a different place - that cannae be revisited!

Family surnames being researched ...
Crawford, Neilson, Lindsay, Reekie, Davidson
Drummond, Laing, Pearson, Tulloch ... will do for starters but there's a whole lot more!

Hello

My first suggestion was going to be to try to get the Berwickshire News archive but you would probably be better posting your query on the Northumberland board.  If the accident was in Beriwck, it would likely be in one of the Berwick newspapers e.g. the Berwick Advertiser.  You could try the Berwick Records Office.  They are having a 2 day family and local history fair on 14th / 15th May

Regards

To avoid any confusion, this matter was first raised in the Common Room by Chiad Fhear and there are several replies already......
