1911 Census - transcription worries
« on: Thursday 07 April 11 01:24 BST (UK) »
Like most of us i been waiting anxiously on the release of the 1911 Scotland Census results, and loaded with lots of increased price credits searched my family.
Many credits later I still have loads of what should have been easy to find names  not found!!

I'm now wondering if its because the results are plagued with transcription errors, here's one I did eventually find ... Patrick McAnaw (looks clear enough to me on the entry) transcribed as Patrick McAnan?? now am i just being petty or does anyone else see its as McAnaw staring you in the face??

Gerry
Farrell / Mcpolan / Devlin / Flood / Kelly/ McGovern/ McCormick
Letham / Leatham / Cattanach/ ODonnell/ BoyleRoss/ McLeod
McAnaw/McInaw/McNay/ Finn/ Eliott
Pollock / Hyslop/ Elder/ Renfrew/ Hart/ Brydon

Motherwell / Anderson / Tradeston / Govan/ Bridgegate/ Aberdeen / Old Machar/ Lanarkshire/ Leadhills/ Penpont/ Muirkirk

I think you're dead right Gerry. How frustrating for you.

The actual entry clearly says McAnaw, and the transcription McAnan. Very poor.
Have you reported it? - I'm guessing you used 'ScotlandsPeople'
I know they were very quick and helpful with a very poor scan of an 1861 Census I reported to them..
You could even ask for your credits to be re-instated if you wanted to take it that far !

I expect there will be a lot of problems to iron out to start with.

Good luck

I had a MEEHAN transcribed as MECHAN

Thankfully it was the only possible entry for the family in the area who later became MEECHAN so I used the * entry

Its clearly McAnaw to me,
The problem I had last night wasn't with the transcription
but looking through previous searches I took a look at one from there,
paid the five credits, only to discover that I had looked at it the night before and printed it off
when previously it would have shown it was already paid,
I have sent a message to let them know, the other thing I had hoped for that with people born in Ireland it would give  an area  :'( it hasn't and I got 2 more from Ireland now :(

I was looking for my mother in Law and couldn't find her despite knowing her exact age and street location, I did find her by looking for her father but it just didn't pick up her name at all even though it was very clear ??

I had the same problem with one of my grandparents, eventually found her through her oldest son as search wouldn't find her.
I emailed Sp re the McAnaw entry and they came back early this morning, usual apology type email but also credited me back my credits so top marks for that.

I've had no problems on that count.

I have had some problems tracing ancestors, but mainly because they changed their names - eg Georgina decided she was called Jane, Margaret decided she was called Jane, and Eleanor decided she was called Helen...
