Re Ernest William Compton

Hi All,

I'm helping a friend look for her father's foster family.

He Was Born 2 October 1923, Roslyn, Dunedin, NZ and posssibly fostered from birth or within 2 yrs. 1923-25ish.

The name Waters rings a bell, but not sure.  One of the daughters was possibly Mae.

Ernest was also known as "Eric" and went to WW2 as a medic, and also was in Japan after the war.

Ernest's biological mother's name was Sarah Mary Compton, father unknown.
Sarah was born  23 November 1903, at Mataraua Island, Otago, NZ, Died 8  November 1927???

Sarah's parents were Alexander (Alec) Compton, and Isabella Galbraith Compton. Both Born NZ as per IGI.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Does your friend happen to have her father's war service record ?

Might be interesting to see who he nominated as next-of -kin.    (Possibly it, (service record,) also shows an address at time of enlistment ?)

Thank you so much for your quick replies.

Yes it is the "Foster parents/family" she is looking for.  I would think its a bit of a long shot.  I too was hoping that NOK would be on the Service Records.

Yes she does have her dad's WW2 Service Records, but unfortunately they are tucked away somewhere,  and as she is a busy working mum with 3 teenagers and hubby, it might be a while before it comes to the surface.

The other bit of info that might help, (incase other family members are looking for the family) is that Ernest had 3 marriages resulting in 8 siblings for my friend.
Unsure if I can list "live" siblings on here, or  need a PM.

I can supply all wives names bar surname of one, and  all names and Year of birth for the children.

Could someone let me know about "live siblings" please.

Looks like a sideways search is needed doesn't it, or NOK on Service Records.

Yes, unfortunately the ruling in this forum is ... NO posting in threads, the names (or other info) which relates to living or possibly-still-living, persons.   (Info should be exchanged via PM.   )

I mentioned the service record because I felt this would possibly give the most accurate information in the event that a foster parent or foster sibling had been nominated as next-of-kin.   

There are though other "avenues" you can go down in this search ... though the "route" is more round-about ... and perhaps more "hit and miss".   

I'll put my thinking cap back on, and get back to you.

Thanks for your reply.  As you say the "round-a-bouts" often yield some good results.  I have not looked  anywhere else at the moment except the IGI, and then only briefly.   WE have a grand total of 28 in the Family tree at the moment. lol

Thanks so much for your reply.  My friend is looking for the family to whom he was fostered.  There may be a clue on his Service Records, but will probably have to wait till after Easter.  I take it that the NZ Service Records are not on line like the Australian ones.

I'm pretty sure she does not know about Sarah Mary's siblings, so that will be a nice suprise for her.  We have a total of 28 in the tree at the moment. lol

I don't know if I'm just plain nosey or just love the challenge of finding  people, but have managed to trip over whole families by looking sideways, with a lot of help of course from our RC friends.

So returning to your question, I guess any info on anyone would be greatly appreciated.
Meanwhile, I'll keep on looking too, and will keep you posted if I find anything.
