1891 Titchfield census - address help! (COMPLETED)
« on: Saturday 09 April 11 19:44 BST (UK) »
I'm looking at the 1891 census return for Titchfield/Fareham, reference RG12/884/95/14.

It's a household of two people, William and Emma Matson (transcribed incorrectly as Matsen) and the writing appears to be a rushed scrawl!

I cannot decipher the address as it appears to be the name of the house rather than the street, the schedule number is 79 and it looks like 'The Mouse' or "The Mount".

I think the next household is in 'Chapple Road' and the previous ones 'something Green'.  Any suggestions appreciated!

It's Sarisbury Green just to West of Titchfield.

There's a Chapel Road there, which could be the modern name for Chapple Rd. I had a look on streetview and most of the houses look relatively new but they are really high up there with a drop down to the left, so a property called the Mount would have been appropriate.

"A manse is a house inhabited by, or formerly inhabited by, a minister, usually used in the context of a Presbyterian, Methodist, Baptist or United Church. The implication is that the minister has been called by God and will remain until he is called elsewhere.

When selling a former manse, the Church of Scotland always requires that the property should not be called "The Manse" by the new owners, but "The Old Manse" or some other acceptable variation. The intended result is that "The Manse" refers to a working building rather than simply apply as a name."

Got it, makes as much sense as The Mount with the area being quite a drop to the left of the road...  It's amazing how these little historic details appear, thanks for looking keyboard and Kim.

I was just about to post about it saying 'The Manor' not 'The Mount' but actually 'The Manse' makes more sense given the man's occupation.

It's a lovely area by the way.
