Free BMD has both of these marriages.

1) Sep 1894 Cheadle 6b/489

11) Jun 1902 Cheadle 6b/471

Do you have him/them in censuses?

Jen :)

having trouble tying him down - William quite a common name even though Pyatt not so common!

Hoping another set of eyes/thoughts may help to pick him out of the options

There is a distinctly possible candidate in 1901, RG13/2631/94/2

William Pyatt, age 25, Widower, living in the household of John Lovatt (42) and wife Marion(40) and listed as Brother-in-law.

He is a postman.

Does that sound familiar and do you know if he had a sister called Marion?

This looks the most likely candidate to me in 1881:

RG11/2747/10/12 - Town End, Cheadle, Staffs
David PYATT  Head  47  Grocer
Sarah PYATT  Wife  42  Laundress
George PYATT  Son  7  Scholar
William PYATT  Son  5  Scholar
(All born Cheadle.)

Possible marriage from Staffordshire BMD

David PYATT to Sarah M R TIPPER, 1858, St Margaret, Draycott in the Moors.

Added: Transcribed as David PYALL to Sarah Mary Rose TIPPER on Free BMD.

Manchester Rambler - that is one of the 2 possibles I found. Liking them due to mothers maiden name being same as middle name.
Suppose next step to try and find David and Sarah in 1871 to see if they have any other children that could tie in with genjen 1901 William

John Lovatt married Marion Pyatt, Jun1884,Cheadle, 6b/451.

Looks promising for that 1901 census entry.

1871 census has them transcribed as Payall. RG10/ 2890/80/4

David Pyatt, 37, Coal Miner
Sarah, 31
Marion, 10
Anie, 8
John Walter, 6

All born Cheadle.

Different occupation from 1881 but it still looks like the right family.

He is a postman.

I can confirm that William Tipper Pyatt was a postman, his daughter (Jessie Louisa Pyatt) wrote to me about the family history (I am interested in the Swetnam line) and said about a photo she had of "Dad in his postman's uniform in front of 99 Charles Street with my Grannie, Louisa Swetnam! My dad, his brother George and John Lovatt - their brother in law - were the first postmen in Cheadle."
