I am trying to trace my ancestors from Ireland ....  My great-grandmothers name was Matilda Jane Downing from Derry. Has anyone heard or knows of the Downing family. Thanks.

Downing isn't that uncommon a name in Co. Derry. Perhaps if you give us an idea of dates and/or places we might be able to help. The more details you provide the easier it is for us to find information or suggest where you can search next.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

marriage of a  Matilda Jane Downing in 1902 Co. Derry.
The familysearch site here http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start has the record of a Matilda Jane Downing born in the registration district of Magherafelt  and the reg. quarter Jul - Sep 1879
O'Kane, O'Mullan: Garvagh Derry

  16 Jun 1902 Clark Smyth married Matilda Jane Downing in Maghera Church of Ireland, Magherafelt District, Co. Londonderry.
