There's a possible death in 1892 in Maldon, aged 42 - not a perfect match for her age of 39 in the 1891 census, but the best I could find.

I notice that Joseph and Selina CARTER, whom you have found in 1911, had with them in 1891 an 8-month-old baby "daughter" named May E CARTER.

(1871 ref: RG12/1392/28/50)

Her likely birth reg: May Emily CARTER, Sep qtr 1890 Rochford 4a 473.

Also with them in 1891 was Selina's unmarried sister Emily BURTON, who turns up in 1901 as Emily ELSLEY with her father Arthur and young May.

Has May CARTER been accounted for after 1891? If not, could the two girls named May be one and the same? Perhaps born to the CARTER couple and later sent out to extended family, or an illegitimate child of Emily registered as though born to the CARTERs?

She is not a perfect match as to either age or birthplace ("Southend" per 1891 census).

Hi ,

That is very interesting as I couldn't find the 1891 on Ancestry , just found it  , in 1901 Joseph and Selina had no children living with them , so either the family had them or May could have been Emily's daughter instead .

I will send for the birth certs  . Many thanks
Petles

It looks like May Emily CARTER probably died Rochford 1892 age 1 http://freebmd.rootsweb.com

Do you know what became of May ELSLEY?  Marriage/death etc.?
