Kev,

There is a Philip MCLAUGHLAN aged 10 in the Scotland 1901 census - however he is in Lanarkshire.

I found him in a search (free as I have valid credits) on ScotlandsPeople at:
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
but did not (pay to) download the search.

The minimum payment to use the site is 6 pounds which buys 30 credits currently valid for 7 days.

Good luck,

JAP

Thanks for that, unfortunately it is not him. I wondered if anyone has got their own disc of the 1901 census to help me?

Kev,

That's a pity!

I don't know whether there's a Scotland-wide index for 1901 (or 1891 or even 1871) on CD - I suspect that ScotlandsPeople may be the only source for Scotland-wide indexes of these censuses?  Someone else might have the definitive answer re Scotland-wide indexes.

McLaughlan obviously lends itself to many variant spellings (and Philip might be recorded as Phillip).  Have you tried using wildcards (* = none, one or more letters, ? = one letter)?

Might Ann have re-married and Philip be recorded under the surname of her new spouse?

Regards,

JAP
