Completed - Ashington Post - Accident in Ashington Nov 1937
« on: Wednesday 13 April 11 18:42 BST (UK) »
I noted a post here from Apr 7, 2010 regarding someone looking for a news article about an ancestor dying in an accident in Blythe in Jul 1937. The forum was great in finding info regarding the coroner's inquest in the Blythe News/Ashington Post at the library there for that person, & I am requesting the same.

My great-grandfather John Greenan of 19 Lintonville Terrace in Ashington died from a skull fracture following a fall down stairs at home on Oct 29, 1937. I sent for his death record which shows there was a coroner's inquest held Oct 30, 1937. I was hoping someone could check the newspaper for me for more information, such as an article and/or death notice.

All help is greatly appreciated!

Hi there,

A very belated welcome to rootschat and an apology for the delay in responding.

I finally got to look at the Blyth News but am sorry to say that nothing appears to have been reported.

The first issue after the date of the inquest was 4th November and there were 2 major inquests to report on that day so perhaps there wasn't a space for your ancestor.  Also no sign of death notice, funeral announcement or acknowledgement.

I also looked at the next three issues (it was twice weekly in those days) but I didn't spot anything.

Christine

Hi Christine-

Your assistance is greatly appreciated! Many thanks for looking for me, in spite of not finding anything.

I hope to be visiting the area this year, and hopefully track down where the family is buried. They lived in Ashington since 1911, and at that same address from 1937 until my last great aunt died in 2005.

Thanks again for your time & assistance.

Jim

No, I did not, Phil, but thanks for asking. I was unable to visit last year as I had hoped. Since Christine said she had looked at the Blythe News and hadn't found anything, I assumed nothing was published. I may be wrong, but I had been pursuing other family things in the meantime. That's why I had marked this as Completed. I didn't want to leave it open if there really wasn't any chance of finding more. I would still hope to someday visit the area, and track down any grave sites. I'm always open to any assistance!

Just a further thought - not all coroner's records have survived but it might be worth looking for them just in case.

They are closed for 75 years but, if my arithmetic is correct, then they should be opened next month.

I can't see his name on the a2a index but I'll check at Woodhorn on Wednesday.

The burials index should help too.

No joy, I'm afraid.

There is a very long list of people on the Coroner's Inquisition files for 1937 but your man is not there.  Apparently not all the files made it to the records office.

Sorry  :'(
