Pubs in Chadderton 1841 - 1867

Hi,

I have a James Whitehead born 1808 and was a Publican in the 1841, 51 and 61 census. He died 1867. He lived Hillock, Chadderton, Lancashire.

Would anyone know what pub/pubs he worked in or how i could find out?

 Image 773 is Beerhouses, there is a James Whitehead , Chadderton, but it seems there is no name for a Pub.
 It`s in a seperate section than the Inns and Tavens which start on image 770. There are a few Whiteheads in there.

There is a difference between a Publican and a Beerseller.

Check the local papers , My ancestor had a beerhouse in Middleton. he got fined for seving beer at an unreasonable hour, for selling beer when the church was havng Sunday service etc

The Surveyors of Chadderton - On Wednesday evening a poll for the election of Surveyor of Highways for the Denton Lane Division, Chadderton, terminated by a majority of fifteen in favour of Mr Thomas Simpson, of Brownhill, farmer. The other candidate was Mr James Whitehead, of Hillock, beerseller

Manchester Times May 2nd 1857
There is a report of a Court case involving a burglary in Hyde and includes

"It seems the prisoner had left the watch as security, or borrowed 4s on it, from Mr James Whitehead, beerseller, Portland Place, Ashton......."

Haven't found James linked to a pub

I have a copy of the book "The History of Chadderton Pubs" by Rob Magee.

I have found that Hillock appears to be some where along Foxdenton Lane, Chadderton near to where Foxdenton park is now, i think?

There is a mention of a James Whitehead who ran a pub called the Punch Bowl at Hillock but there is no write up about this pub.
 A James Whitehead is also mentioned as running the Sportsmans Arms, which is actually on Denton Lane, the Cow and Calf on Foxdenton Lane and the Linnet which is now called the Railway and Linnet which is on Grimshaw Lane. Grimshaw lane is at the end of Foxdenton Lane.
I have re-read the write  ups about these pubs but it is all a bit confusing and it could be that there was more than one Whitehead family in the area that were running these pubs.

Hi,

Thank you all for help, some excellent findings.

Sal, that info is really helpful as i know that after James Died (1867), the 1871 census shows his second wife Hannah at the Cow and Calf, so i guess it was possible he ran all the pubs there at some point?
