Help- can anyone read this occupation
« on: Thursday 14 April 11 18:58 BST (UK) »
Hi,
this is my first post, I wonder if anyone can help me read this 1841 census.
I cant work out the occupation of Edward maskall or Thomas Dunthorne. I think the woman are (F S) Female sevents, and possible Edward is annuient but just cant be sure.

The census is from Hadleigh Suffolk, Coppesfield Mill. 1841

Many thanks in advance.

I'd say that Edward Maskell is a Merchant and Thomas Dunthorne - Ind ( of independent means)

I'll second third that :)

Thanks  :) what a fast response.  Sorry to sound like a dummy but do you know what.. of independant means.. means? would that mean he had enough money to not work?

Hi Alex

I would consider that enough money not to work is correct. Also they might have been left money in a Will by relatives etc so that was a good basis not to work.
I was going to suggest what I do if I cannot read the writing as some of it is really terrible to distinguish.  I go to the next census and hopefully you have a different scribe with better writing and hopefully it might be the same reason.
If not, its good to come on this site and there is always someone who can let you know what it says.
regards
