Yes thats right William Lea(1745) did marry twice, first to Ann Jones and then to Martha Cadman.Ive only found two children of William and Martha,Mary born in Dudleston in 1782 and Charles born in 1790,which seems quite a gap between the two!

There may be more children again of Charles and Ann,there being a big gap between 1745 and 1754.

As far as Charles himself I looked in all  the Flintshire parishes for a Baptism to no joy.

Regards
William Russell Jones.

Agreed, they both seem quite big gaps in birth years, there maybe infant deaths, but still they are usually recorded as a baptism.

Charles is a mystery and I definitely read "Hanmer Flints" as a birthplace, so unlikely to be out of county - perhaps a non-conformist or chapel baptism?

I have a possible baptism for Ann Jones 11/4/1745, Hanmer, parents Edward and Anne Jones - sorry if I'm stating what you already know, I'm still pretty new to the Lea genealogy, but learning pretty fast!

As far as Ann Jones is concerned, whilst I may have been a little too general perhaps in only saying she was born in Flintshire,my cousin V has her as born in Overton with no parents stated. She did marry William Lea at Overton(07/11/1767).

As far as her origins are concerned, maybe the christian name Lodwick given to her son could hold a clue?I can't find instances of it being used in any Lea family beforehand.

Anne Jones does seem quite elusive and I guess the marriage record is the only source of help so far. I agree about 'Lodwick' being a possible family name. I'm trying to think of the convention... 1st son named after father's father, 2nd son after mother's father, 3rd son after father.

I've looked at John Lea's will 1801, Bettisfield Hanmer
will 1799, buried 4/2/1801
He mentions his daughter Hannah Roberts and his brother William Lea.
Familiar names we have been looking at, but no confirming evidence this is 'our' William Lea of 1745

Onward and upward!
Regards,
Philip

The John Lea you mention could well be a "missing" child of our earliest Charles Lea.There is a John Lea with wife Jane having two children in Penley,Jane(1782) and Charles(1785).

John Lea (1801 will) would have been born about the same time as William (1745), and your John/Jane Lea's son Charles (1785) would tie in to his grandfather's name.

It's getting even more interesting !

Yes very interesting!I am also struggling to fit in a William Lea born c 1798 who married a Jane.He is given variously as born in Sanford Shropshire or Hanmer Flintshire. He had known children Ann(1821),Eleanor(c1830) and Jane(1840).Ann and Eleanor were born in Flintshire whilst Jane was born in Ruabon Denbighshire.

Ann married an unknown Williams before 1851.Eleanor before 1861 married a John Jones and amongst her children were a Job Lea Jones (c 1860) and a Lodwick Lea Jones.(1863).Jane married a Joseph Phillips born in Hanmer in c 1837 and is to be foound living in St martins Shropshire in 1891 and 1901.

I haven't had much chance to look at that family, but with names as Job Lea and Lodwick Lea Jones, they must belong somewhere! So after a very quick look I found

1871 Denbs Church Shocklack D12/P4
John Jones and Elinor - John b. Salop Loppington; their family, including Job and Lodwick

1881 Denbs Holt D2P2
John Jones b. Salop Loppington, with Lodwick, b. Flints

I noticed that Lodwick Lea (1774) had a brother John Lea (1776) who married Margaret Dodd. John and Margaret had 7 children all born Ellesmere Shropshire, including a William born 1799.

Just a few random items, which I guess you have looked at already, but thanks for keeping me up to speed with your findings - appreciated!
