1851 census-Simpson in Finghall
« on: Friday 15 April 11 01:12 BST (UK) »
Hi all,
I am researching on behalf on another lady and was wondering if someone can find the following brothers in the 1851 census please
.
Thomas Simpson b.c. 1827, Finghall (Bedale)
Christopher Simpson b.c. 1834, Finghall (Bedale)

Not sure on parents as yet, possible Thomas and Mary, but any other findings could be possibles.

Thomas married in 1853 and they came to Australia in 1856 and Christopher married in 1857 and came to Australia in 1860

Any help appreciated, also links to parish registers, please.  ;)

Thomas I can find in 1851:

Reference HO107, Piece 2379, Folio 305, Page 7
Red House, Leyburn

Simpson, Thomas  Head  M  71  Labourer  b Fingall
Simpson, Mary  Wife  F  65  Labourer  b Fingall
Simpson, William  Son  M  23  Labourer  b Fingall
Simpson, Thomas  Son  M  25  Labourer  b Fingall
Simpson, Isabella  Daughter  F  26  Labourer  b Fingall
Simpson, Mary  Grand-daughter  F  1  b Fingall

There is only 1 Christopher Simpson, born in Fingall, but he is aged 20 (so born c 1831).

Thanks KGarrad,
that is great.  Was that the ONLY possible Thomas that suited, forgetting possible parentage.

That still looks good for Christopher, the approx date of birth came from a birth cerificate of his sons, so a slight variation is possible.

If you are able to, can you possible find both these brothers in 1841?  Just curious if they are from same household.
Christopher stated he was an uncle on one of Thomas's childrens birth certificates, but there is always the possibility of him just stating he was an uncle - just covering all bases  ;D
I had found a possible 1841 for Thomas and it looks like the same family but never saw Christopher there.  Just curious as to where he might have been.

Thankyou so much for your help, I know my contact will be very excited.

cheers
Margaret

1841 I found the same as you:
Mother, father & Thomas.

Christopher (he is still the only one in 1841!) looks like he is a post boy at Hauxwell Hall?

Reference is HO107, 1253, 20/7, 8

Both censuses I looked for boys in the Leyburn Union district - which covers Finghall

Thankyou so much for that, really appreciated.

Curious about Christopher, must have boarded with his employers.

Great info, thanks

Hi both  :)

Sorry if this confuses things, but the 1841 census also has this family with sons Thomas and Christopher:

1841
HO107/1250 2 10 15
Bedale, Yorkshire
Market Place

John Simpson, 40, Watch m
Mary, 35
Elizth, 15
Thos, 14
Will, 13
Chrisr, 11
Sarah, 9
/
Mary Wright, 20, F S

All born in county.

Later english census show one Christopher Simpson born Finghall ca. 1831/1833, married to an Elizabeth. He's around until at least 1891 so it seems there were definitely 2 Christophers.

Hi Tati,
hmmm, probably, but better to have found it now than follow the wrong line for 10 years ;D

familysearch IGI shows a lds member has put in a Christopher who married an Elizabeth in 1869, I think. Prob that one.

Christopher was a brick layer in Australia if that is any help, but Thomas was into farming, or at least an overseer for someone elses property.

All those name on that 41 census is similar to those carried on for their children.  In the census KGarrad found there is an Isabel.  There is no Isabels used by Thomas and Christopher in the naming of their children.
Just an extra thought.

Can you find them both in 1851 with parents John and Mary?

Thankyou,
Margaret

I am also looking at the possibility of Christopher marrying twice.
first in 1854 to either Ellen Rhodes or Mary Fisher.  Had a daughter sarah Ann, (b.c. 1854) mother died.  There are deaths which could suit Ellen or Mary to fit timetable.
This would fit in with the next marriage to Jane Raw in 1857.
But sadly no census to cover that timeslot

This should be the above Christopher in 1851 - Thomas isn't there I'm afraid and I can't see any obvious match for him elsewhere either (sorry!)

Mary Simpson, head, wid, 49, Innkeeper, b. Bedale
Christopher, son, 20, Farmer, b. Bedale
Sarah Ann, dau, 19, Farmer, b. do.

Elizabeth Jobes, dau, mar, 25, Grocer, b. Bedale
+ 2 servants
