Good news!
with the possibility of Thomas and Christophers father being either John or Thomas and mother being Mary, I was able to narrow down my search for their deaths in Victoria, Australia.
I found a possible death for Thomas, and my contact eagerly ordered the certificate.

Thomas's death in 1875 stated his parents were John and Mary (surname unknown)  but from familysearch I found a John Simpson marry a Mary Wright.
Christopher was the informant on the death certificate and stated he was the brother.
The death cert. also stated that Thomas was born in Bedale.

So now we know that the John and Mary family are the correct ones.
